Cheney Reservoir is a man-made lake located in Sedgwick County, Kansas, about 25 miles west of Wichita. The reservoir was created in 1964 by the construction of the Cheney Dam on the Ninnescah River. It covers an area of approximately 9,500 acres and has a maximum depth of 55 feet.
Cheney Reservoir provides drinking water to the city of Wichita and also serves as a popular recreational destination for boating, fishing, camping, and hiking. The reservoir is stocked with a variety of fish species, including bass, crappie, catfish, and walleye, making it a popular spot for anglers.
There are several parks and campgrounds located around the reservoir, including Cheney State Park, which features over 1,900 acres of recreational land and facilities. Other popular activities at the reservoir include water skiing, jet skiing, and swimming.
